Liz re-launches "Bus Back Tonight" campaign following11.14.28am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 20th Oct 2009
Liz Leffman is re-launching her campaign to get evening bus services reinstated in the Meon Valley villages, because Hampshire County Council has ignored the pleas of hundreds of people who signed a petition two years ago when the service was cut. Liz Leffman presented a petition to Hampshire County Council following cuts to the 69 bus service which runs from Winchester to Fareham via Bishops Waltham, Swanmore and Wickham. At the same time hundreds of young people in the area, who attend Peter Symonds College, signed their own petition, asking HCC to reinstate evening buses. Many of these young people have to ask their parents to come and collect them if they need to stay in college after 6pm as there is no other way of getting home. Liz has launched a Facebook site and an online petition, and will be presenting the petition to the County Council again in the new year. "It is absurd that at a time when fuel prices are going through the roof and CO2 is threatening our planet, people have to use their cars or hire a taxi to get home from work or college, or to have an evening out." said Liz. "The County Council received the petition and sent me a polite note acknowledging its receipt. Since then, nothing has happened, and no-one seems interested in looking at whether it makes sense to re-instate the service. "Cutting the service without properly assessing need is absurd, and I am asking the council to think again." People wanting to have their views heard can find Liz's petition online at http://ourcampaign.org.uk/busback and can also join Liz's Facebook group "Liz Leffman's Bus Back Tonight Campaign."
