Liz Leffman is still calling for compulsory 20mph speed limits outside our schools

Liz Leffman, Prospective Lib Dem MP for Meon Valley, is still not satisfied at the level of commitment shown by Conservative-led Hampshire County Council regarding the '20 is plenty' speed campaign and would like to see compulsory 20mph speed limits outside our schools.

The Lib Dem team in Meon Valley have been campaigning for compulsory 20mph speed limits outside schools in the constituency for some time now and have been disappointed by the County Council's decision to only offer up only 'advisory' 20mph limits.

The County Council took up the opportunity to publicise the unveiling of the first '20 is plenty' signs at West Tytherley Church of England Primary School last week, with Tory councillor and spokesman for environment, Cllr Mel Kendal, commenting: 'The message is clear: 20 is plenty. Putting up these signs will help road users think twice about their speed.'

Liz said: "The fact is that the County Council has brought in a half-baked initiative which offers schools the chance to take part in an 'advisory' 20mph scheme and which schools have to fund themselves to the tune of £200 just for two signs or £450 for signs with posts if they want to take part.

"We still believe the best move would be for the County Council to introduce the compulsory 20mph speed limits that we want for the safety of our children but, if not, then the least they could do is supply the advisory signs to schools free of charge."
